Multidisciplinary Coordination

Whether planning for or responding to a large scale disaster, GIS is an ideal platform for understanding the scope of an emergency, developing appropriate action plans, and communications strategies for an effective response. GIS can provide a snapshot of overall incident status by integrating many different sources of data, and instantly provide answers to important questions like: how many acres are involved?; how many people live in the impacted area?; where are my closest resources?; and how likely is it that adjacent areas will become at risk? GIS support for large scale regional emergency events requires advance planning and coordination. Good data management, the use of appropriate IT and GIS standards and the adoption of standard operating procedures are all important aspects of this planning and coordinating effort.

Crawl

Emergency Management Maps are a set of map documents and associated files for use in emergency management map production. The maps help emergency management and public safety staff produce a standard set of maps used in briefing and response activities.

Walk

Emergency Management Maps include: 1)An Incident Action Plan map which is an 8.5”x 11” map product that can be used to support operations and personnel and complements the Incident Action Plan Index Map.  2)An Incident Action Plan Map Book which was developed with the Data Driven Pages toolbar and the 1Km and 10Km U.S. National Grid (USNG). The Data Driven Pages Toolbar allows you to create a series of layout pages from a single Incident Action Plan map document. 3)The Incident Briefing map which is an ANSI E-sized map containing details about the specific incident and the surrounding area.

Run

Support of Incident Management matures when you focus on using mobile devices and field observations. Incorporating mobile into these workflows allows updates to situational awareness to flow into the system as it is happening and allows incident management to communicate the latest updates into a visual layout instantly. This has obvious impact on the speed in which information can be understood and acted upon. It supports incident management at both the strategic and tactical/operational levels by giving context to the hard decisions that experienced Public Safety personell must make.
